Revenge complicates duty as modern day bounty hunter Sean Kelly defends his queen in an archaic world on the verge of war.
After killing his wife’s murderer, Sean eludes prosecution in Hinterland, a world of necromancy, murderous spirits, and various tribes vying to steal power from their queen. After he foils an attempt on the queen’s life, she turns him loose to find the attacker on the condition that he pledge her absolute loyalty. While searching Hinterland for the assassin, he learns that his wife’s murderer is still alive and involved in the ever-widening plot against the queen, and that the person behind the scheme has more sadistic plans for Hinterland than just overthrowing the crown. By the time he catches up to the assassin, full-on war breaks out, and Sean’s only chance at salvaging peace is to betray the queen he swore to protect.
